Therapeutic Counsellor, BACP (Reg)

Therapeutic approach

Julian is an experienced therapeutic counsellor with extensive experience working with adults, young people and children from age 11 upwards, and is able to offer therapy in both English and French. He offers both brief, focused counselling, concentrating on key issues; and also longer term therapy that takes a broader perspective in order to bring about lasting change.

Julian understands that sometimes the normal, reliable support systems offered by family, friends and colleagues is not always enough to get us through the situation or challenge we are confronted with; there is a need for someone who can really help you understand and work through these challenging moments. He works primarily with a Gestalt approach, which emphasises that people’s problems can be better understood and resolved as one part of the many things that interact in someone’s ‘life space’.

Working from a Gestalt perspective is an invitation to the client to engage in therapy in a very relational way; the therapeutic exploration becomes a collaboration with the therapist. To give you an analogy of how I work, if the person I was working with was floundering in a swimming pool, I would be in the pool alongside, supporting them, rather than standing on the edge shouting instructions. Engaging in a process in this way is more than just sharing your problems and can be hugely rewarding.

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression and suicidal thoughts
  • Addiction (alcohol, drugs, sex)
  • Bullying and abuse
  • Low self-esteem
  • Trauma
  • PTSD

Qualifications and experience

Julian has a background in both business and teaching, and qualified as a Therapeutic Counsellor in 2010. He founded and ran a successful business in the food industry, but also had the experience of seeing a part of that business go bust and having to start again before he was able to enjoy the fruits of his labours. He then spent 12 years teaching languages and ICT to 11-18 year olds in a big comprehensive school – the experience of which deeply enriched his capacity for patience, tenacity, and working with emotional intelligence. He is currently completing his Masters level post graduate Diploma in Psychotherapy.

Julian grew up in a diplomatic family and spent most of his childhood growing up in different countries. He speaks fluent French and is able to work therapeutically in French. From this background he brings a wealth of life-experience and wisdom to his work.
